Why copper supply cannot respond to copper demand

Copper conducts electricity better than any affordable alternative, which makes it the physical requirement of electrification rather than one option among several. An electric vehicle contains several times the copper of a combustion car. A wind turbine, a solar farm, a data center and every kilometre of transmission line rebuilt to carry them all consume it. Demand is therefore tied to three simultaneous buildouts: transport, generation and grid.

The supply side cannot answer on the same timescale, and that mismatch is the entire investment case. A copper deposit takes well over a decade to move from discovery through permitting, financing and construction to first production. Discoveries have become rarer and lower grade, meaning more rock must be moved and processed for the same tonne of metal, which raises both cost and energy intensity. Meanwhile the existing large mines age, and grades in a producing pit decline naturally over its life. Even at a price that would justify new supply, the metal cannot appear for years.

The companies divide by what else they own. Diversified miners produce copper alongside iron ore, coal and other commodities, which cushions them when copper is weak and dilutes their exposure when it is strong. Copper focused producers give direct exposure to the metal and move much more sharply with it. Developers hold deposits that are not yet mines, and their value rests on permitting, financing and construction execution rather than on current production.

Two other divisions matter. Ore type determines processing: sulphide ores are concentrated and smelted, oxide ores are leached and processed on site into finished metal, and the two have different cost structures and different capital requirements. Jurisdiction determines whether a deposit ever becomes a mine, since the largest concentrations sit in countries where royalty regimes, water rights, community agreements and political stability decide project timelines as much as geology does.

The metal price itself responds to global industrial activity, which is why copper has long been treated as a reading on the health of the world economy. That makes these equities exposed simultaneously to a structural story about electrification and a cyclical one about industrial demand, and the two can point in opposite directions for extended periods.
